The Music Department receives many more applications than we are able to admit. Undergraduate students are encouraged to apply to SUNY Buffalo State as early as possible.
As soon as you complete your application, go on to Step 2
Check out our Audition Dates and see which one works best for you.
Sign up for an audition date and time. When signing up for an audition, you will need to pay a $25 audition fee by credit card. If you can’t schedule an on-campus audition, click here to submit an online audition video.
All students who audition are automatically considered for Music Department Scholarships!
If you have questions or problems, please email the Music Department Office or call us at 716-878-6401.
Now that you have been accepted to Buffalo State and have an audition scheduled, it’s time to prepare for your audition.
Take a look at the audition requirements and select pieces to perform at your audition. We suggest selecting pieces with your music teacher’s help. Practice your pieces until they are performance ready. You may also be asked to sight-read during your audition.
Students who audition on campus will be given diagnostic tests in Music Theory and Ear Training. These exams are meant to help us place you in the appropriate level of each course. Your admission to the music department will not be affected by your performance on the diagnostic exams, however the results of the exams may impact degree-completion time.
Please contact Dr. Crystal Reinoso (Music Theory) or Dr. Thomas Witakowski (Aural Percpetions) for more information regarding diagnostic exams. All incoming students are encouraged to review the Music Theory Study Guide prior to taking the diagnostic exams.
All applicants must provide a prepared essay about their most influential teacher. This person does not have to be a music teacher, but needs to be a person who has had a profound influence on your life.
In this essay, describe your relationship with this person and why this person has been a positive role model, guide, and inspiration. Memorable characteristics and educational experiences are also important to mention.
Length: 500-750 words
