Jazz workshops are small performing ensembles for 6th-12th grade instrumental music students. Students learn the fundamentals of jazz including listening, performing, improvising, composing, arranging, and transcribing. Rehearsals take place Sunday afternoons in Rockwell Hall and are led by Buffalo State music faculty and students.

Auditioning for Jazz Workshops at Buffalo State
Auditions are for placement purposes only and will be held to determine appropriate groups for students.
Students should be prepared to demonstrate:
1. Knowledge of commonly used scales and chords (e.g., major, minor, dominant, and dorian)
2. An improvised solo on a 12-bar blues in the key of concert Bb or F (e.g., "Blue Monk" or "Tenor Madness")
3. Sight Reading
4. The melody of "Joy Spring" Please prepare the clef and key appropriate for your instrument: Treble clef -- Piano, Flute, and Violin Bb -- Trumpets, Clarinets, and Tenor Saxophone Eb -- Alto Saxophone and Baritone Saxophone Bass clef -- Trombone, Tuba, Cello, and Bass
Drummers: Be prepared to demonstrate commonly used styles (e.g., swing, shuffle, second line, funk, and bossa nova)
