Clarinetist Crystal Hearne Reinoso has been a member of the music faculty since 1989. She currently teaches clarinet, music theory, and woodwind techniques, and directs the department's woodwind chamber music program; she has also taught courses in music history, and served for several years as the department's music coordinator. Reinoso earned her doctor of musical arts in clarinet performance at the University of Michigan, her master of arts in musicology at the Eastman School of Music, and her bachelor of music in music education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her major teachers were Fred Ormand, Stanley Hasty, and John Weigand. Prior to her appointment at Buffalo State, Reinoso taught at Meredith College, St. Mary's College, Campbell University, and at her own private studio in her home state of North Carolina.
An active freelance clarinetist, Reinoso has performed professionally with the Buffalo Philharmonic, the New Sousa Band, the Greater Buffalo Opera Company, and the North Carolina Symphony. At home in both classical and popular venues, Reinoso has also performed as principal clarinetist for the Buffalo performances of the national tours of Fiddler on the Roof, The King and I, and My Fair Lady, and for a five-city tour with the Irish Tenors.
Reinoso has performed nationally and internationally as a solo clarinetist. In 2004, Reinoso traveled to Hungary, where she performed as featured clarinet soloist with the University of Szeged Wind Ensemble. She has appeared in recital programs given at International Clarinet Association conventions in Washington, DC, and in Columbus, Ohio, where Reinoso performed a new work she had recently commissioned. An active recitalist in the Buffalo metro area, Reinoso has presented several full solo recitals and has participated as a recital partner in many programs given with local or visiting musicians. In addition, she has served as artistic director/grant writer/performer for two major Buffalo State College theme concerts, "A Faculty Festival of Mozart" and "A Showcase of Women in the Performing Arts."
Throughout her career, Reinoso has pursued combined interests in clarinet and musicology. During an academic sabbatical to Brazil, she collected and studied Brazilian woodwind music; as a result of her research, she was selected to give a presentation on Brazilian "choro" at the 2004 International Clarinet Association convention. Reinoso has also published a two-part article on Stravinsky's Three Pieces for Clarinet Solo, and presented lecture-recitals on the same topic at universities in several different states. She is a member of the International Clarinet Association's Research Presentation Committee and served as a judge for presentations given in 2002 at the International Clarinet Association convention in Stockholm, Sweden. Reinoso has recently been appointed to the music panel of the New York State Council on the Arts.
