Mission Statement
The Music Department at SUNY Buffalo State is committed to providing students with a practical and comprehensive education, driven by the diverse needs of the 21st-century musician. Working within a supportive and collaborative environment, Buffalo State music students will develop strong musicianship and professional skills allowing them to take an active role as artists and leaders in the global community.
Goals

To engage music majors in learning experiences necessary for the development of professional-level musical skills through participation in a variety of coursework and individualized projects.

To develop innovative approaches to curriculum, instruction, and technological implementation.

To engage pre-service music educators in field experiences that prepare them for the opportunities and challenges commonly encountered in urban and/or rural music education settings.

To provide a general education curriculum through which Buffalo State students can explore diverse musical genres, the role of music in society, and participate in musical ensembles.

To contribute to the cultural enrichment of all Buffalo State students and Western New York region by providing a multitude of concerts, recitals, symposia, festivals, master classes, and lectures.

To work collaboratively with a variety of campus constituencies to promote diversity through curriculum, faculty and student recruitment, community partnerships, and resource allocation.
