The Music Department at SUNY Buffalo State is committed to providing students with a practical and comprehensive education, driven by the diverse needs of the twenty-first-century musician. Working within a supportive and collaborative environment, Buffalo State music students will develop strong musicianship and professional skills while establishing long-term relationships with peers and faculty.
The Bachelor of Arts in Music program (B.A.) is structured to prepare students for twenty-first-century careers in music. Real world internship opportunities, guest lecturers and performers representing the wide array of careers in the arts, access to cutting edge technology and an outstanding and dedicated faculty provide majors with opportunities to develop strong musicianship skills and broad musical knowledge in a liberal arts context.
B.A. students complete at least four semesters of one-on-one vocal or instrumental study, augmented by six semesters of participation in a major performance ensemble. A culminating Capstone experience requires candidates to design their own individualized project or performance.
The Bachelor of Music in Music Education program (B.Mus.) provides student musicians with the musicianship, performance, and pedagogical skills necessary to be successful in the pre-K through grade 12 music classroom.
Music education majors earn Initial New York State certification for elementary, secondary choral, and secondary instrumental settings. Candidates must demonstrate outstanding performance skills, show expertise in music theory, history, and non-Western musical traditions; and complete extensive coursework in professional music education.
Buffalo State's Online Master of Music Education degree (M.M.Ed.) is designed for in-service music teachers who already possess an initial teaching certificate. This degree is composed of online courses that are critical to the ongoing professional development of music teachers leading to New York State Professional Certification.
The Minor in Digital Music Production (DMP) is an interdisciplinary program that offers hands-on experience in the increasingly growing field of music technology. Students may choose from a variety of courses in digital music composition, sound recording, sound synthesis, advanced mixing, and music business. Enrollment is open to students from any major at Buffalo State.
